How old are you both?
Elena: I am 27 and Vasille is 32.
Tell us a bit about yourselves.
Vasile: I am from Romania, I live in Leeds and my pitch is in Holmfirth. I travel there each day by bus, which takes one hour 30 mins each way.
E: We live together in a small flat in Leeds. It’s OK for at the moment. I wish we had the money to bring our children here. But we cannot afford it.
How long have you been in the UK?
E: We came to England five years ago to find work. Now this is our home.
V: Romania is not good, no job, no nothing. There was no money for us there. We cannot go back to Romania.
Tell us about your family.
E: We have been together for 12 years. We now have two daughters. They live in Romania with my family. But things are very difficult at the moment. Our son has died. He was only two years old. He had a heart problem. We had to try and pay his hospital fees and I was begging the doctors to help him. Now my heart is broken.
How have you managed to cope?
E: We have a good marriage. We look after each other.
Do you like selling the magazine?
V: Yes. My customers ask me if I am OK. And I try and be happy for my customers. But my boy has died and there is a lot of pain.
E: I like this job. This is my job. I am working for my kids. The people in the office are like my family. If I have a problem I can come in and talk to them. They help with things like translations with doctors.
What do you hope for in the future?
E: I have a lot of health problems at the moment. I have an infection and am not well. Now I pray to get better.
Do you have a message for your customers?
V: Thank you to the people who have helped.
E: Thank you to everyone.
