Response to the Renters’ Rights Bill

With the Renters’ Rights Bill now becoming law, attention turns to what this means for people and communities navigating the housing system. Across Big Issue North and The Big Life Group, we see firsthand how access to safe and stable housing underpins so many other parts of life.

Fay Selvan, Chief Executive of The Big Life Group, said: “Everyone deserves a safe, secure and affordable home. The Renters’ Rights Bill is a timely reminder that access to decent housing is not just about policy, but about fairness and equity.

“At The Big Life Group, we see the impact of a housing system that too often fails those most in need: people stuck in poor-quality accommodation, priced out of their homes, or constantly facing the threat of eviction. When people don’t have somewhere safe and stable to live, everything else becomes harder; from finding work, to staying healthy and building relationships.

“Through all our services, we see how a lack of accessible, stable and supported housing keeps people trapped in cycles of insecurity, poor physical and mental health, and poverty. We directly address this through providing our own supported housing, helping people access housing advice, and supporting people who are vulnerably housed to earn an income through Big Issue North. However, it’s a drop in the ocean in relation to the level of need.

“This new legislation rightly strengthens protections for tenants and helps to address unfair evictions, but it must be backed by a wholesale shake-up of the housing sector. We need genuinely affordable homes and more housing and support for people who have experienced, or are at risk of, homelessness. We need long-term investment, commitment and compassion to build a housing system that gives everyone dignity and security.”
